There are several reasons why a DVD won t play Most of the time, it s because your DVD player doesn t support the type of DVD you ve inserted As shown in Figure 9-1, some PCs can play DVD movies, but not HD DVDs Try inserting a non-HD DVD first to see if that s the problem If the DVD still won t play, there could be other issues Although not a common problem, your DVD drive could be disabled To see if the DVD drive is disabled and enable it: 1 Click Start, and click Computer 2 Right-click the DVD drive, and select Properties 3 From the Hardware tab, select the DVD drive, and click Properties 4 From the General tab, click Change Settings, and click Continue 5 Click the Driver tab 6 If Enable is shown, as in Figure 9-2, you ll need to click it to enable the drive If it says Disable, do nothing 7 Click OK twice, and then restart your PC if prompted If this is not the issue, check the AutoPlay settings again, and verify that no third-party DVD application is selected, as this can interfere with Windows Vista You should also try disabling or uninstalling the offending program You do not need a DVD decoder to play DVDs in Windows Vista Premium or Ultimate edition It is included with the operating system Another issue may be your computer resolution You can try changing the resolution to a lower setting You can access these settings by right-clicking an empty area of the desktop and selecting Personalize Select Display Settings Make changes as needed

Clipping groups are an underused and interesting effect You can compare clipping groups to looking through binoculars you see only what s available within the confines of the lenses view area Much more exists than what you can see through the lenses, but everything else is clipped away With clipping groups, imagine that the binocular lenses are the base layer and the view is the clipped layer To create a clipping group, you must start with a layer other than a background This layer must contain a combination of solid and transparent areas Shape layers and text layers are ideal This will become our base layer Anything we apply to this layer as a clipping group will fit into the shape of the base layer

You can combine layer masks with clipping groups for interesting results Let s demonstrate this effect 1 Begin with some text, a background, and a layer that you want to clip to the text, as shown in Figure 5-22

2 In the Layers palette, move the image layer above the text layer Remember that the base clipping layer must be underneath the layers you want to clip 3 Here is where it all happens (see Figure 5-23) Place your mouse between the two layers you want to clip and hold down the ALT key (OPTION on the Mac) Your cursor will turn into a little figure 8 This means that the two layers will be converted into a clipping group 4 Click the mouse, and the clipping group will be created Notice that the clipped layer is indented, as shown in Figure 5-24 Figure 5-25 shows what happened to our image after we finished this procedure Notice that the photo now appears inside the text Because nothing is finalized yet, you can still ungroup the layers; to do so, repeat step 3, or drag the clipped layer to another location on the Layers palette

Finally, if you still can t play DVDs, try opening Media Center, inserting a DVD, selecting TV + Movies, and selecting Play DVD You may receive an error message with a helpful hint to solving the problem

Figure 5-26 shows an example of a clipping group dressed up a little I used a duplicate of the photo for the background and faded it out using a Levels adjustment layer An unmodified copy was clipped to the text Finally, a drop shadow was added for effect

You ll want to configure settings for optimal playback There are a lot of settings that you can change by selecting Tasks and then selecting Settings Settings specifically for DVDs include selecting the DVD language, enabling closed captioning, and setting options for your remote control You can configure these settings as desired to personalize Media Center
